North to Alaska---But , Asheville is our Home!! Alaska is BIG, Alaska is Wild, Alaska is BEAUTIFUL and Asheville Ski Club members are adventurous. Each day they were going in every direction like a bunch or ants. Sightseeing, flightseeing, dog sledding, touring a large Wildlife Conservation Center animal park, glacier cruses or Sealife Center in the town of Sewart. We had enough free time in Anchorage to walk the town to our hearts content and some days we even skied. Our accommodations were first class in both Anchorage and Alyeska Resort. The sun rises and sunsets were spectacular. In anchorage we overlooked Cook Bay and at Alyeska we could see Turnagain Arm up the valley. Ice flows moved in and out with each tide change. the food was great as well, We ate so many fish dishes that week the seals were worried that there might not be enough left over for them. OH, the skiing you ask!!! It was good. a small mountain but enough to satisfy on the few days we did ski. The runs on the North Face 9under the Tramway) were all double blacks, some of the steepest terrain I have ever seen. the back side was one huge bowl, wide open runs from top to bottom. They set up a race course for Crescent and of course the fastest lady on the mountain was our own Jennifer Lindabury. The fastest lady of the Mature group was our Jan Green. Barbara Finn and Mike Armstrong took fifth and sixth, Gail Anderson and Gary Swinea also Ran. On our last day of skiing we were able to make first tracks of fresh snow, On our second run from the top Jan Green (remember our mature fastest lady) took a spill and broke her ankle. But not to worry... She was able to hobble out and spend the gift certificate she had won. A fun trip for a fun group Submitted by Gary Swinea
